Our Story

In 2020, Chess Buddies Canada started off as a club only open to chess players in Newfoundland and Labrador. The pandemic had closed down all chess clubs in the province. For a year, players were interested in playing online chess on Lichess.org. The club had about 30 members, with 20 players regularly playing in the tournaments hosted.

In 2021, the club massively expanded to 70 members, featuring players all around Canada. Our first tournament of the year featured 34 players, which was the biggest tournament the club had. We developed a large, interested crowd of chess players from around the country.

The club now has 170 members! After opening our doors to everyone, we got players around the country participating in our events! Instead of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chess Club, we decided to change to Chess Buddies Canada, an online chess club dedicated to creating long lasting relationships between chess players across Canada through live tournaments.

Our Mission

Chess Buddies Canada is a volunteer organization with the purpose of providing free online chess tournaments for players across Canada. We want to give younger chess players opportunities to play, learn, and develop new skills by playing other players throughout Canada, while allowing older chess players to meet new opponents virtually. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many chess clubs are shut down to help contain the spread of the virus. Our club aims to help chess players to keep playing in these challenging times.
